Brownie balls
Sugar free treats
Our brains are biologically driven to binge on energy dense, fatty foods. This is because in our hunter gatherer days kilojoules meant survival. If you didn’t eat when you could you would die. Given what scientists know today about our early ancestors it is reasonable that our brains are hardwired to fixate on sugary and fatty foods. This then enabled us to store excess energy as fat to survive when food was not available. Our brain evolved many millions of years ago- long before you could buy a block of chocolate from the local supermarket. The sugar we consumed back then only came from seasonal fruits, and carbohydrate and fibre intake from vegetables. We are unfortunately hardwired to seek and binge on sugar and fat, and today when it is plentiful, it’s making us sick and fat.
Makes 12
Ingredients
1 cup almonds
1 cup walnuts
10 medjool dates pitted and soaked in hot water for 5 mins
1 avocado cut into small chunks
½ cup rice malt syrup
¼ cup coconut oil
½ tsp pure vanilla extract
½ cup cacao
1 pinch pink rock salt
¼ cup shredded unsweetened coconut
Method
Add the nuts and dates to food processor and pulse for a minute or two until they are finely chopped and begin to stick together.
Add in the remaining ingredients (except the coconut) until all the ingredients are blended together. It should all stick together.
Remove mixture from the food processor and form into a ball.
Break off small chunks and roll into small balls.
Roll each ball in coconut (you could also use shaved dark chocolate).
Once rolled, place in the fridge. This will allow the coconut oil to firm and you will then have delicious fudge like brownie balls.
