N-Acetyl cysteine
I started supplementing with N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) three years ago and I am quite upset it is becoming increasingly hard to purchase. The main reason is the FDA attacked it due to its suggested therapeutic effects for use in Covid patients.
NAC increases the production of glutathione, which is an important antioxidant helping reduce free radical damage. It also plays a role in the detoxification of heavy metals and other harmful substances. The thing that intrigues me about glutathione is the implications for mental health due to its ability to lower oxidative stress -and it seems that those suffering mental health issues have lower levels of glutathione.
A systematic review of all of the evidence suggests that there is favourable evidence supporting NAC in the treatment of major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, drug addiction, obsessive-compulsive disorder, autism, Schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease and certain forms of epilepsy (progressive myoclonic). Also, the use of NAC in anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have preliminary evidence, but require larger studies to confirm.
